- Abstract
- Discusses mental confusion and misinterpretation of numbers caused by misleading or assumed reference classes and ambiguous information presentation. After presenting the following 3 tools for creating mental confusion, single event probabilities, conditional probabilities, and relative risks, real stories of mental confusion, such as health risks related to oral contraceptives, hormone replacement therapy, or the benefit of mammography screening, are commented on. In conclusion, the importance of educating the population in statistical thinking is emphasized.
